Alfonso Ruiz Miguel is Professor of Philosophy of Law at the  Autonomous University of Madrid. He has been a researcher at the University of Turin and visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh, the ITAM in Mexico and the University of Valparaiso. He has written several books and numerous articles on the theory of law and, above all, on political philosophy.

The book is organized around five major themes. The first, on the theory of law, deals with the nature of legal dogmatics, the principles of normative hierarchy and equality before the law, judicial argumentation and illicit evidence. The second section discusses various issues of constitutional scope, from autonomy over one's own life to education for citizenship, conscientious objection or the principle of secularism. The third section is devoted to the notions of freedom and democracy, as well as their relationship with communitarianism, the market and relativism. The fourth section deals with the principle of equality in different aspects, such as liberalism and social democracy, political equality and women's citizenship. The fifth and last section deals with peace, cosmopolitanism and nationalism.
